Here are a couple of things I did yesterday! some logging improvements I was having a problem on my server where I was logging in 3 different ways: Rails was logging to a file called production.log my Go proxy was logging to Docker Compose’s default log thing (whatever that is) my Firecracker manager service was logging to journald This was very annoying because I was constantly confused about where to look for logs and it was impossible to see everything in one place.
a silly Rails login bug (or: pairing is magic) On Wednesday morning suddenly I wasn’t able to login in my dev environment, even though it was working in prod and it had worked the day before and I thought I hadn’t made any changes to my login code. The error was really weird though – it was telling me that it was expecting a provider column in my users table (for the OAuth provider), and there wasn’t one! How could this be?? I was sure hadn’t made any changes to that table.
Hello! I’m going to do a batch (virtually) at the Recurse Center, starting on Monday. I’ll probably be blogging about what I learn there, so I want to talk a bit about my plans! I’m excited about this because: I love RC, it’s my favourite programming community, and I’ve always been able to do fun programming projects there. they’ve put a lot of care into building a great virtual experience (including building some very fun custom software) there’s a pandemic, it’s going to be cold outside, and I think having a little bit more structure in my life is going to make me a lot happier this winter :) what’s the Recurse Center? The Recurse Center (which I’ll abbreviate to “RC”) is a self-directed programming retreat. It’s free to attend.

Say hello to apps.chofter.com, the new home for everything I build. The speed at which I ship new things has massively increased with the advent of AI, and I’ve been encouraged by the fact that, as I approach my sixth decade, new ideas for useful & fun things to build still come at me apace. These no longer fit on my personal homepage, which is a combination of work experience, interests, things I made long ago that are no longer relevant (but still interesting), and of course, the many apps & tools I have out there in the wild right now. The site was 100% built using Claude Code, which did an amazing job of inspecting all the various websites, app stores and code bases and constructing a site in 30 minutes or so. I had to push it to make the site more SEO friendly, pre-rendered to HTML rather than over relying on client side rendering, but that was it. So there we go, enjoy the delightful and hopefully useful apps that I’ve already built and will continue to build in the future

In this video, we look at why fork() needs copy-on-write, how it works inside the kernel, and a memory usage problem that Instagram encountered with Python.
