I'm doing another Recurse Center batch!

from Rc-2020 on Julia Evans [alt+shift+b] in programming

Hello! I’m going to do a batch (virtually) at the Recurse Center, starting on Monday. I’ll probably be blogging about what I learn there, so I want to talk a bit about my plans! I’m excited about this because: I love RC, it’s my favourite programming community, and I’ve always been able to do fun programming projects there. they’ve put a lot of care into building a great virtual experience (including building some very fun custom software) there’s a pandemic, it’s going to be cold outside, and I think having a little bit more structure in my life is going to make me a lot happier this winter :) what’s the Recurse Center? The Recurse Center (which I’ll abbreviate to “RC”) is a self-directed programming retreat. It’s free to attend.

Day 51: Fixed my logging and made a couple of puzzles

Here are a couple of things I did yesterday! some logging improvements I was having a problem on my server where I was logging in 3 different ways: Rails was logging to a file called production.log my Go proxy was logging to Docker Compose’s default log thing (whatever that is) my Firecracker manager service was logging to journald This was very annoying because I was constantly confused about where to look for logs and it was impossible to see everything in one place.

Day 33: pairing is magic and beautiful git diffs

a silly Rails login bug (or: pairing is magic) On Wednesday morning suddenly I wasn’t able to login in my dev environment, even though it was working in prod and it had worked the day before and I thought I hadn’t made any changes to my login code. The error was really weird though – it was telling me that it was expecting a provider column in my users table (for the OAuth provider), and there wasn’t one! How could this be?? I was sure hadn’t made any changes to that table.

Day 17: trying to wrap my head around autoencoders

Hello! Right now I’m back to working on neural networks with sketches of faces. current goal: cluster the faces somehow As a starting point, I thought it’d be fun to, instead of generating faces, get the neural network to do some unsupervised clustering of the faces! The idea is: Get the Machine Learning to cluster the faces into groups See if I like the faces in some groups more than others If I do, then maybe just train a model on the cluster of faces that I like how do you actually do clustering of a sequence of vectors though? The usual way to do clustering is with k-means or something, but these drawings of faces aren’t a single vector, they’re a sequence of vectors! So k-means wouldn’t make any sense.

SumatraPDF new features: April 4, 2026

New in the SumatraPDF pre-release builds: Bake PDF File New Bake PDF File command (CmdPdfBake) in the Ctrl + k command palette turns interactive form fields and annotations into static page content and saves the result as a new PDF, which then opens. Show PDF Outline New Show PDF Outline command (CmdShowPdfOutline) in the command palette shows the document’s outline (table of contents) as text in a window. Tab Groups menu Saving and restoring tab groups now has its own Tab Groups submenu (in the Favorites menu) with Save Tab Group and Restore Tab Group. Both are also in the tab right-click menu. There is also a window for managing saved groups (#4402). Screenshots include open menus Take Screenshot also captures open menus as separate windows you can pick. Menu bar improvements with tabs The custom menu bar shown when tabs are in the title bar works more like a normal menu bar, and toggling the menu bar is more reliable (#5442, #549). More: changes from April 4, 2026 and the full changelog.
