Close Access Denial

from Lennart Koopmann (KJ5KRF) [alt+shift+b] in programming

I’ve been working on nzyme full-time for 10 months now and I was struggling to find a good name for what its WiFi functionality does. The fact that it looks at not only WiFi but also Ethernet data does not help with that problem. If I have a minute to explain it, it’s no problem - but there was just never a good, snappy title for it. Time to come up with a better name for what the WiFi functionality of nzyme does.

Why Amateur Radio?

I always had a diffuse idea of why people are spending so much time and money on amateur radio. Once I got my license and started to amass radios myself, it became more clear to me. It always seemed like amateur radio was an extremely practical endeavor. The goal appeared to be to establish alternative communication forms in case of a breakdown of existing ways to communicate or to be able to stay in contact with civilization when out hiking in the woods.

Documentation Belongs in Engineering

Many product companies start out with a very heavy focus on their engineering teams. At some point, many companies move the hosting and writing of documentation out of engineering and into a separate part of the company. It could be marketing, it could be customer success. This is a mistake.

43 Hours on the Amtrak Southwest Chief

In September 2022, after watching many YouTube videos of other people on long-distance Amtrak trips, I finally embarked on a journey of my own: I took the Amtrak Southwest Chief train from Chicago to Los Angeles. Continue reading to learn more about it and why I’ll do it again on another route. “Why would you want to do this?” This is a question I got a lot. When I told friends that I booked a ticket to be on a train for over 40 hours, many didn’t understand why anyone would want to do this when you can fly for cheaper and in so much less time, enjoying comforts like in-flight entertainment, drinks, snacks, and the airport lounges.

A new home for all my apps: apps.chofter.com

Say hello to apps.chofter.com, the new home for everything I build. The speed at which I ship new things has massively increased with the advent of AI, and I’ve been encouraged by the fact that, as I approach my sixth decade, new ideas for useful & fun things to build still come at me apace. These no longer fit on my personal homepage, which is a combination of work experience, interests, things I made long ago that are no longer relevant (but still interesting), and of course, the many apps & tools I have out there in the wild right now. The site was 100% built using Claude Code, which did an amazing job of inspecting all the various websites, app stores and code bases and constructing a site in 30 minutes or so. I had to push it to make the site more SEO friendly, pre-rendered to HTML rather than over relying on client side rendering, but that was it. So there we go, enjoy the delightful and hopefully useful apps that I’ve already built and will continue to build in the future
