Merry Mouse and His Trip to the Moon (1953)

from Dreams of Space - Books and Ephemera [alt+shift+b] in history

My next 4 posts are celebrating children's illustrated fiction about going to the Moon. Even though I have been collecting these children's book for over 30 years it still is very exciting to find one that you never knew existed. Jack Coggins was an amazing space artist in the 1950s. His two early children's books that were especially memorable were Rockets, Jets, Guided Missiles, and Space Ships (1951) and By Spaceship to the Moon (1952). I have multiple copies of these in English, French and German. So I was very excited to find a 1960 reprint of his 1953 book Merry Mouse and His Trip to the Moon. It was written by his wife Alma Coggins. This is a fictional book with many of the same style of space painting about a mouse who goes to the Moon to find green cheese. I have chosen to reproduce almost he whole book since your chance of finding a copy are pretty small. I hope you enjoy this lost space art treasure. Coggins, Alma. Illustrated by Coggins, Jack. Merry Mouse and His Trip to the Moon. (2nd edition) (Jolly Books.) London: L. Miller & Co. (20 p.) 1960.  (reprint of 1953 1st edition).  Above is the cover and below an illustration from Rockets,Jets...1951 Here is the cover to By Space Ship to the Moon 1952

Six Days on Luna One (1965) Part 2

To continue with this fantastic space art book from 1965. Above is the 1963 Hungarian cover. I have not been able to find the book yet. There is so much here I run out of comments. This is a translation into Russian of a 1963 Czech book. The 1963 book's title was:  Šest dnů na Luně 1 (1963)  I quote from here: http://blog.edenfuture.com/2011/01/six-days-on-luna-1.html  "Maybe the most beautiful book from Teodor Rotrekl´s peak period is Šest dnů na Luně 1 (Six Days on Luna 1, 1963) written by a journalist Ivo Štuka (1930 - 2007). This book for older children combines a real history and possible future of the space exploration with a kaleidoscopic novel set in our solar system. Almost every page contains a color illustration by Rotrekl, some of them quite exciting." Shtuka, I. Illustrated by Rotreckl, Teodor. Шесть Дней На Луне-1 (Six Days on Luna One.) Prague: Artia. (211 p.) 1965.   Part 3 Next Week

Quick's Flying Saucers and Rocket Ships (1953)

A couple of rare (ish) punch-out books from 1953. I had tried to find copies for a while but finally it cam together. I really like the space graphics and the space helmet on the back. I also want my own "Robot Man" mask to wear. Lots of cool space toys. Jones, Jim and Virdone, Paul. Quick's Flying Saucers and Rocket Ships. (vol 2 is Capt. Quick’s Space Patrol.) (10 p.) 1953.

Buster Brown Goes to Mars (1958)

This comic is a promotional comic from Buster Brown shoes. If you went into a shoe store and tried on Buster Brown shoes you would get a comic book with the name of the store stamped/printed on it. Buster Brown  (and his dog Tag) were a feature of 1950s and 1960s shoe store. In this case Buster goes to Mars and tames a space dog. But of course the adult at home doesn't believe him even though the Martians gave him a medal. Buster Brown Goes to Mars. (Promotional comic from Buster Brown Shoe Company.) NY: Western Publishing. (16 p.) 1958.  Buster gets to see the Dark Side of the Moon (years before Pink Floyd)

Captain Ray-O-Vac’s Adventure and Game Book (1952)

Sorry for the sporadic postings, I should have some lined up for the next couple of months.  Mostly there will be comic book premiums and punch out books. To start how about "Flashlights in Space...!" This was a comic premium from Ray-O-Vac batteries company. There was not much story except how their flashlight help defeat the bad guy and get them safely back to Earth. I do enjoy the flashlight shaped rocket ship. Captain Ray-O-Vac’s Adventure and Game Book. (Promotional comic from Ray-O-Vac Company Flashlights and Batteries.) NY: Western Publishing. (14 p.) 1952.
