Building the Bell System

from Construction Physics [alt+shift+b] in architecture

If someone was making a list of the most important American companies today, it’s unlikely AT&T would be anywhere near the top. It’s large, but not notably so: it came in 32nd in the 2024 Fortune 500 ranking, just above Comcast and below Verizon. Its offerings are not unique: it’s just one of many companies providing phone, internet, and other communication services. By market cap, AT&T is less than 10% of the value of Amazon, and around 4% of the value of Apple.

SYNEGIC office by UENOA architects

This is the headquarters of SYNEGIC Corporation, a manufacturer of structural screws for timber construction, in Tomiya, Miyagi. Completed in 2018, it is the first building in our "CLT trilogy" of offices, followed by YUKI office (2024) and CWM office (2026). We were asked to propose an advanced architecture that would expand the possibilities of timber construction. At SYNEGIC, desk work sits alongside experiments and collaboration with outside researchers. We wanted to create a place where the way employees work can influence each other and create a lively dialogue and a sense of solidarity, so we planned a single space under a large roof spanning 18 metres, under which various places are arranged here and there. By moving the floor level along the terrain in relation to the roof structure, we gave the office the sense of place it needed to function in a building with a large roof, which tends to be uniform: a small space that feels like an attic, or a large space that feels conne...

More firms are adopting building performance analysis, AIA finds

The AIA has released its latest 2030 Commitment By the Numbers report. The initiative tracks the architecture and design industry’s progress toward carbon-neutral buildings by 2030.  Based on performance data from 2025, the report found that 67% of whole-building projects submitted through the program were energy modeled, indicating continued adoption of building performance analysis among participating firms. However, reported reductions in energy use declined compared with previous results. Related on Archinect: 10 standout sustainable projects honored at AIA COTE Top Ten Award 2026. Marlboro Music Reich Hall by HGA. Image credit: Albert Vecerka/Esto According to the AIA, the decline partly reflects changes in how energy performance is measured. Energy-modeled projects use baselines determined by individual firms rather than values from the 2003 Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey,  which the organization says may provide more realistic comparisons of building performanc...
